You mean I get to review two books?!? Yes, please! Read on for my MCBD Review of The Little Doctor/El Doctorcito.
El Doctorcito/The Little Doctor
(Juan J. Guerra, published by Pinata Books)
El Doctorcito is a delightful bilingual children’s picture book. Salvador is an elementary school student who is so excited to run home and share his good grades with his family. Before he can share his good news, his Abuela asks him to accompany her to the doctor to help her with English. At the clinic, Salvador is aware of how scary it can be for a person newly arrived in the country to see a doctor. Abuela feels afraid and judged by a doctor who doesn’t speak Spanish, doesn’t even bother to get to know her and racially profiles her. Reflecting on this experience Salvador begins to dream about how he can make a difference for people like his Abuela if he became a doctor. This sweet little story is timely and exactly what our children need to be able to envision themselves in careers in which they are not often portrayed. I cried into my morning coffee cup because Salvador’s story is the reality that so many people face every day. In him, I saw my students and my son. I cannot wait to share this with my little man. I hope that he will be inspired to dream big dreams and try to make the world a better place for everyone.
